Introduction to ACDF (Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion)

Relieve Pressure and Restore Cervical Stability

Sharp, shooting pain down your neck, shoulders, and arms can be a major barrier to participating in regular activities, including exercise, lifting objects, or even sitting and standing. These symptoms are often caused by a herniated or damaged disc, or by bone spurs that compress the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots.

Peter Swiatek, MD, performs ACDF (anterior cervical discectomy and fusion) for patients with cervical disc herniation, cervical myelopathy, cervical radiculopathy, and other conditions in Carmel, Indianapolis, Westfield, and Kokomo, Indiana.

What Is Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion?

ACDF (anterior cervical discectomy and fusion) is a neck surgery designed to relieve nerve or spinal cord pressure from a herniated or damaged disc. The procedure can provide substantial relief from pain, numbness, and tingling in the shoulders and arms, making regular activities easier and more pain-free.

During the surgery, Dr. Swiatek removes a herniated disc and/or bone spurs and places a bone graft or spacer into the empty space to keep the correct height. Metal plates and screws keep the spinal bones steady so they can heal and grow together over time, permanently fusing those neck bones.

How to Begin Your Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Journey

Planning your ACDF surgery is an integral part of the treatment process. During a consultation with Dr. Swiatek at our office in Carmel, Indianapolis, Westfield, or Kokomo, you will share information and complete various tests to help Dr. Swiatek determine your condition and the best treatment.

  1. Detail your neck pain, arm numbness, tingling, weakness, or any other symptoms you are experiencing.
  2. Let Dr. Swiatek know if you have had any other treatments in the past for your spine, including physical therapy, injections, or medications.
  3. Dr. Swiatek will check your reflexes, muscle strength, and neck range of motion in a series of tests.
  4. Dr. Swiatek will look at your MRI or X-rays to locate pinched nerves or spinal cord compression and pinpoint exactly which disc level is causing your symptoms.
  5. Dr. Swiatek will recommend the best path forward to treat your symptoms, including conservative methods like physical therapy, medications, and activity modifications, or ACDF surgery if necessary.

What to Expect on the Day of Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Surgery

You should not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your surgery. When you arrive at our facility in Carmel or one of our affiliated hospitals in Carmel, Indianapolis, Westfield, or Kokomo, you’ll check in and review your treatment plan with Dr. Swiatek, who will mark the front of your neck.

  • General anesthesia will ensure you don’t feel any pain during the surgery
  • Dr. Swiatek will make a small incision in the front of your neck, move soft tissues aside, and remove the damaged disc and any bone spurs
  • He will place a bone graft and/or spacer with a metal plate and screws to fuse the vertebrae
  • The incision will be closed with dissolvable suture after everything has been moved back into place

Our care team will monitor your vital signs as you wake up in a recovery area.

In some cases, Dr. Swiatek may recommend combining this ACDF procedure with an approach from the back of the neck. Typically, this is done immediately after completion of the ACDF procedure in the front of the neck. This combined front and back of the neck surgery may be recommended in cases of extensive nerve or spinal cord compression, multiple spinal levels requiring ACDF surgery, revision surgery, or deformity. Screws and rods are typically used in the back of the neck to stabilize the spine and facilitate fusion. During your evaluation, Dr. Swiatek will discuss whether or not a combined approach is necessary to treat your symptoms.
