Introduction to ALIF (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion)

Restore Lumbar Stability Through an Anterior Approach

The spine is a vital body part that acts as the body’s central support pillar. It keeps you upright, allows you to move and bend, and contains the spinal cord, which is responsible for helping your brain send signals throughout your body. Over time, natural aging, wear and tear, and injury can cause the spine’s physical components to degenerate and lead to spinal cord and nerve compression, which can cause pain, numbness, and balance and strength problems.

As a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon at Indiana Spine Group, Dr. Peter Swiatek performs ALIF (anterior lumbar interbody fusion) in Carmel, Indianapolis, Westfield, and Kokomo, Indiana, to address symptoms of various spinal conditions to help you participate in regular activities with reduced pain and discomfort.

What is Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion?

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a lower back surgery performed to fix severe, ongoing low back or leg pain. It treats weak or unstable spinal bones and helps with worn-out or damaged discs caused by natural aging and wear and tear.

The procedure accesses the spine through the front of the abdomen to remove a damaged spinal disc causing the discomfort, pain, numbness, or other symptoms. The procedure stabilizes the spine to help reduce or eliminate symptoms long-term. The surgery is personalized based on your unique symptoms, anatomy, and condition, which will be evaluated during a consultation with Dr. Swiatek.

What to Expect on the Day of Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery

On the day of your surgery in Carmel, Indianapolis, Westfield, or Kokomo, you can expect to be at our facility for a few hours, including 2-6 hours for the surgery depending on the extent of the planned procedure, plus time afterward while we monitor your vitals. Dr. Swiatek works with a trusted vascular surgeon to access the anterior lumbar spine.

In many cases, Dr. Swiatek will recommend augmenting the anterior approach with screws and rods placed through the back of the spine. This stabilizes the ALIF and promotes fusion. Additionally, the ALIF may be part of a larger surgery when necessary.

The surgery will involve the following:

  • General anesthesia will be administered to ensure you are asleep for the entire operation
  • The vascular surgery team will make an incision in the area of your lower belly to reach the spine without cutting your back muscles.
  • The major blood vessels and organs are moved aside, and the damaged disc is completely cleaned out from between the vertebrae.
  • An interbody implant containing bone graft is placed in the disc space to restore height and support fusion between the vertebrae.
  • If necessary, Dr. Swiatek will add screws or a small plate to keep the spacer locked tight while the bones heal.
  • Vascular surgery will close the incision.
  • In many cases, Dr. Swiatek will then place screws and rods through an open or minimally invasive approach from the back. This provides additional stability while the fusion develops.
